Physicians Committee Is Offering Grants to Farmers Who Are Growing Health-Promoting Fruits and Veggies While Phasing Out Animal Agriculture

WASHINGTON— the Physicians Committee, a nonprofit public health advocacy organization with 17,000 doctor members, is offering grants to assist farmers who would like to grow health-promoting foods like leafy greens, beans, and berries while phasing out animal agriculture. Launched in November 2024, the Physicians Committee’s Convert to Crops program is modeled on a program established by lawmakers in Vermont who provided grants to farmers who wished to diversify or transition from one type of farming to another.

“As colorectal cancer rates continue to surge in younger people, the USDA must warn consumers that the bacon, deli meat, hot dogs, and other processed meats they are putting on their plates are putting them at risk for cancer,” says Anna Herby, DHSc, RD, CDCES, nutrition education specialist for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.

Plant-Based Diets Reduce the Risk of Cancer

Plant-based diets reduce the risk of developing cancer, according to an analysis of 17 prospective studies. Both vegan and vegetarian diets were found to lower overall cancer risk. Vegetarian diets reduced colorectal, colon, and breast cancer, and likely reduced several others. Fewer studies examined vegan diets, but they still showed reduced breast cancer risk from avoiding animal products. No increased risk was found for colorectal cancer.
